Massimo Cellino has been quoted by the Sun explaining why he feels Steve Thompson was suspended as Leeds United’s assistant.
Thompson was recently removed from his duties as Neil Redfearn’s number two, with the first team boss offered no explanation as to why his deputy had been suspended from his role at Elland Road.
Cellino has explained that it was all to do with something Thompson said following the side’s recent 3-0 at Fulham.
“I’m told Steve Thompson called our sporting director Nicola Salerno an offensive name in front of other people after the game at Fulham,” said Cellino.
“This is unacceptable. The board backed Salerno and I understand this.”
Regardless of the incident, there can be no excuses for the way Redfearn has been treated in terms of how he was overlooked when the decision was made.
Redfearn has been very open in the past about how much he feels Thompson helped him in his role as first team boss, allowing him to get more work done with specific areas of the team.
He should have at least been consulted and informed before the decision was made, but has instead been left to feel isolated by the club’s board.
The focus should be looking ahead to Redfearn’s contract this summer, backing him in the transfer market and then pushing for promotion.
However, Redfearn has more questions than answers at the moment.
