West Bromwich Albion have been a fine example of defensive play since Tony Pulis took charge – but not so on Saturday.
The Baggies were defeated 4-1 by relegation-threatened Queens Park Rangers, and one defender in particular came in for criticism after the match.
Joleon Lescott has been a mainstay in West Brom’s defence since his arrival, playing 30 matches to date and captaining the side on four occasions earlier in the campaign.
But despite helping to stabilise a side that has done what any Pulis side does and swiftly climb up the table, Lescott had a game to forget on Saturday.
QPR were 3-0 up before half-time, with Bobby Zamora’s dominance of Lescott one of the key factors in the proceeding criticism.
While Victor Anichebe scored shortly before the hour-mark for West Brom, Joey Barton put the game to bed in the final moments.
It was a result that left West Brom eight points clear of the drop-zone and surely safe, but Pulis will not be pleased and you can expect them to be working on defensive drills prior to their next match against Leicester City.
After the match we took to Twitter to see what West Brom fans thought of Lescott’s performance and you can read a selection of what we found below:
Shame Lescott and Mac are too far past it and Gardner doesn't understand the concept of marking— alf (@AlfiePrice_) April 4, 2015
@anj36_ Fletcher was poor today as was Lescott. Bad performance all round but to say that about Fletch is extreme.— Lizzie Hayward (@ehayward93) April 4, 2015
Wasn't I saying a few weeks ago that Lescott is overrated.......— There It Is (@martincroom) April 5, 2015
I knew Lescott wasn't the quickest but he got outpaced by a 34 year old Bobby Zamora. #MOTD— JH (@jhosiene) April 5, 2015
@TonyBarretTimes Also, alongside him, Lescott was running as if through a bowl of custard.— paul e ellis (@e_epaul) April 5, 2015
