Celtic boss Deila says Martin Odegaard is 'not even close' to Kris Commons

Ronny Deila has favourably compared one of his Celtic players to a Real Madrid sensation.

Celtic manager Ronny Deila has been speaking to the Daily Record about Real Madrid midfielder Martin Odegaard.

The Bhoys boss knows the teenager well from their time together at Norwegian side Stromsgodset, and a recent report from The Scotsman linked Celtic with a loan move for one of the hottest young prospects in Europe.

But Deila believes Odegaard is not a patch on one of Celtic’s current stars.

“In my opinion, Martin is one of the most talented 16-year-old’s in the world, maybe even the number on, but he’s not better than a top Tippeligaen player,” Deila said.

“He’s not better than Kris Commons. He’s not even close.”

Deila went on to say that Odegaard could go on to become world-class, but it is interesting that the Celtic manager is not getting caught up in the hype surrounding his young countryman.

He will have seen plenty of young players come through the ranks and he will know that it takes time, hard work and more than a little luck to ultimately make it.

As for Commons, he has featured 36 times for Celtic this season, scoring 12 goals and providing seven assists to date.

In total he has 77 goals and 57 assists in 184 matches…and for now, it is clear Deila needs him far more than a teenage sensation who recently made headlines for moving to the Bernabeu.
