Robbie Savage has written in The Mirror that Liverpool need to sign two players next season to compete for the Premier League title.
The former Derby County and Leicester City midfielder believes that the Reds must recruit a centre-back and a midfielder.
“Liverpool will miss the boat and finish outside the top four after that pivotal defeat by Manchester United before the international break,” Savage wrote in The Mirror.
“But I expect them to be serious contenders for the title next season if Brendan Rodgers signs a commanding centre-half and a dominant midfielder.”
While Liverpool do not have the team to challenge for the Premier League title at the moment, the two areas which Savage suggests to strengthen are not necessarily the ones they are weak in.
Although the Merseyside outfit struggled defensively before manager Brendan Rodgers switched to a three-man back-line, they did sign a certain Dejan Lovren in the summer of 2014.
Lovren is having a season to forget, but perhaps it would be a bit rash to reject him after one bad campaign. After all, the 25-year-old was a huge success at Southampton in 2013-14.
Perhaps Loven has been found out and his debut campaign in the Premier League was a fluke...
The other area which Savage suggests Liverpool should reinforce is midfield, but should they?
The Reds already have a “dominant midfielder” in Emre Can, who has been deployed in defence after Rodgers changed his formation.
Moreover, Joe Allen is not a bad player and had done the job efficiently in midfield so far this season.
What Liverpool need most in the summer transfer window is a striker who can compliment Daniel Sturridge.
