One Arsenal star has hailed another following a fine team performance this weekend.
It is always impossible to tell how clubs will respond directly after an international break, but Arsenal began Saturday’s game as if they wanted to win it as quickly as possible.
Time and again Arsenal attacked but it was an unlikely player who ultimately put them ahead and opened the floodgates.
Hector Bellerin is enjoying a breakthrough campaign that suggests he could become an integral figure for Arsenal for years to come. And he scored a wonderful opener, cutting in from the right and unleashing an unstoppable drive with his left foot that found the bottom corner.
That was the Spaniard’s second goal of the season, after he also found the net in the 5-0 victory against Aston Villa earlier in the campaign. But this one was far more important, as it finally broke down a Liverpool defence who had held firm for 37 minutes.
Speaking after the match, Mertesacker said of his young Arsenal colleague, “He’s given us a lot of energy this season.
“He’s stepped up because we’ve had a lot of injuries but he gave us such a great energy and he’s capable of producing great performances like today.”
Many more like this, and he could become Arsenal’s first-choice right-back far earlier than Mathieu Debuchy would like.
