Jurgen Klinsmann's confidant sounds warning to Tottenham's DeAndre Yedlin

The American right-back's international career is at risk if he can't earn regular minutes at Spurs, US technical advisor Berti Vogts has said.

New US national team technical advisor and former World Cup-winner Berti Vogts has told ESPN FC that DeAndre Yedlin has to raise his game if he wants to get on the pitch for Tottenham Hotspur.

Yedlin, 21, completed his much-anticipated move from the Seattle Sounders at the start of winter transfer window, after a £2.5 million deal (per the Guardian) was agreed in August, but he has so far failed to make a single appearance for the first-team.

The promising right-back has also made just two starts for the club’s Under-21s and his chances of earning his senior debut before the end of the season as Mauricio Pochettino’s side push for a top-four finish look slim.

His lack of Spurs action saw the 14-times capped defender restricted to cameo roles in the USA’s recent friendlies against Denmark and Switzerland, with Eintracht Frankfurt’s Timothy Chandler starting both matches instead, and Germany legend Vogts, who has been a part of head coach Jurgen Klinsmann’s staff since the summer before taking up his new role last week, stresses that he will have to earn regular club minutes in order to compete for a spot in the line-up.

“Yedlin has to learn the lesson," he said. "OK, he was on the World Cup team, but now he goes down [in level]. That's not good. You can go down maybe for five, six months, but then you have to step up. He has to train more than all the other players."

Nevertheless, it’s worth noting that, while Chandler has impressed for Frankfurt this season, his performances for the US have continued to underwhelm and even come under intense criticism - as reported by NBC Sports.

Given Yedlin’s considerable promise, it's no surprise that the Seattle-native remains the national team’s future right-back in most peoples’ minds but questions will start to be asked if he continue to stagnate in the reserves into next season.
