Celtic manager Ronny Deila has told BT Sport that Rangers are not among the best teams in Scotland at the moment.
The Norwegian boss made the comments during an interview with club legend Chris Sutton which was broadcast before the Bhoys’ Scottish Premiership clash against St. Mirren away from home on Friday evening.
“All I will say is that we need the best teams in the Premiership, and right now they are not among (the best teams),” Deila told Sutton when asked if he hopes that Rangers get promoted this season. “But if they come up, then it will add more interest to the Scottish Premiership.”
Deila’s comments may not go down well among the Rangers fans, but he has a point: the Gers are not among the best teams in Scotland.
The simple fact that Rangers are playing in the Scottish Championship backs Deila’s statement.
Of course, the Glasgow giants could get promoted to the Scottish Premiership at the end of the season, but at the moment there is no guarantee that they will do so.
Rangers have lost the chance to win the Championship, which means that they will have to return to the top flight of Scottish football via the playoffs.
That will be far from easy, even for a club as big as Rangers.
There is no doubt that Rangers remain one of the two biggest clubs of Scotland, but as a football team, they are not among the elite at the moment.
