Arsene Wenger is behind this Arsenal star’s struggles, suggests club great

Arsenal’s Theo Walcott has been linked with an exit from the club.

Arsenal legend Ian Wright says that Arsene Wenger’s decision to play Theo Walcott in a wide role has been detrimental to the player’s progress at the club, the Daily Mail report.

The former Southampton star has been linked with a move away from the Gunners, as per the Daily Mail, owing to his current contract situation which expires next summer.

His current earnings of £100,000 a week, as reported by the Guardian when signing a new deal in 2013, would reflect an important member of the Gunners’ first-team.

However, the 26-year-old has started just three Premier League matches since his return from injury and with his future in doubt, Wright feels his stalling Gunners career is down to his boss.

“It's a shame for him, and the fact that people are talking about him maybe moving on if someone else comes in makes me quite sad,” he was quoted as saying by the Daily Mail.

“I always believed Theo should have been a striker at Arsenal with his pace. I thought playing him on the right would last so long and then he would get moved inside.

“I'm not saying he's the same kind of player as Thierry Henry by any stretch, but I thought Arsene would move him inside.

“I think that's been to his detriment, because he would have learned a lot more about the game and runs he'd have to make. I've seen him finish very well when he gets into one-on-one situations.”

Prior to his injury, Walcott was in sublime form during the 2013 festive period, and there were hopes he would finally reach the heights suggested on his arrival in North London.

However, with Olivier Giroud through the middle central to the Emirates outfit’s style of play, there is little room for another central striker, which fellow attacker Danny Welbeck has also found out.

With such heavy competition for places, Walcott has a big decision to make – either accept a role as a bit-part player in a wide position or search for a new club, perhaps as early as this summer.
