Attacking full-backs have become increasingly important figures in football since the turn of the millennium, and on occasions they represent more of a winger than a defender.
This weekend, Arsenal take on Liverpool in a highly-anticipated clash and on show will be two of the Premier League’s best attacking full-backs – Kieran Gibbs and former Sevilla star Alberto Moreno.
An England international up against a Spain international with both possessing speed, skill and sound crossing ability makes for a fascinating match-up. But which player has performed better this season?
Kieran Gibbs vs Alberto Moreno
|Won per Game||Interceptions per Game||Effective Clearances per Game||Ded Duels Won per Game||Ball Recoveries per Game||Accurate Passes per Game||Accurate Crosses per Game||Key Passes per Game||Appearances|
As per the table provided by Opta Stats, there appears to be a clear winner as the Gunners ace comes out on top in six of the eight key full-back categories.
Defensively, Gibbs has produced more interceptions, effective clearances, ball recoveries and defensive duel winners per Premier League encounter than the Reds ace.
Moreover, the 25-year-old is seemingly more accurate in his distribution with the ball, averaging more accurate passes and more accurate crosses than his upcoming rival.
Moreno, however, hasn’t, by any stretch of the imagination, suffered a disappointing campaign during his debut season on Merseyside.
The 22-year-old has often been played as a left wing-back this season owing to his ability to contribute well to attacking situations and providing a genuine outlet in the final third.
He has averaged more key passes than Gibbs this season and, with two league goals to his name, Moreno has found the net more times than Gibbs and fellow compatriot Nacho Monreal combined.
With both teams possessing such rich attacking quality, both full-backs, if selected, are set to have their work cut out from a defensive point of view and they could play huge roles in deciding the outcome.
