Bent has been more or less out of the Villa team all season, having managed just seven Premier League appearances.
Sherwood, who took charge of Villa following the dismissal of Paul Lambert in February, has admitted that he would have been helped with Bent’s presence in the team.
"He’s a goalscorer and if he gets chances he will score. I’d like to have him here now, put it that way,” the former Tottenham Hotspur manager told The Birmingham Mail.
“You can’t have enough goalscorers in your building. I'm not sure what stage he went out. I would have looked at the options I had.”
Bent struggled to impress Lambert, but it appears that Sherwood rates him highly and would have played him in the final weeks of the season.
Villa are currently struggling for survival in the Premier League, and they could have done with someone of Bent’s experience.
The 31-year-old has been in good form for Derby, although he is currently sidelined with injury.
Bent has scored five goals and created as many chances in nine Championship appearances for the Rams, who are aiming for a top-six finish in the league this season.
