Report: Newcastle and Southampton to battle for 24-year-old Ligue 1 star

Newcastle United and Southampton are both keen on Ngolo Kante, according to reports today.

Newcastle United and Southampton will battle it out to sign Caen midfielder Ngolo Kante this summer, according to a report on talkSPORT.

Kante has been one of the stars in Ligue 1 this campaign and his form has not gone unnoticed, with the Premier League clubs both hoping to convince the 24-year-old that a move to England would be good for his career.

Kante has made 29 appearances this season, scoring twice, with his powerful displays in midfield catching the eye. He is reportedly available for around £5 million.

Impact for Newcastle if they signed Kante?

The Magpies have had a tendency to bring players in from France in recent times and, therefore, Kante should fit in well at St. James' Park.

The midfielder would bring pace and power to the North East outfit's midfield, but it could be that he is being lined up as a replacement for Mousa Sissoko.

The Telegraph reported today that Sissoko is set to depart Newcastle this summer and Kante would have big shoes to fill if that were the case.

Impact for Southampton if they signed Kante?

Southampton have shown that they have an eye for talent and Kante would have to prove very capable if he were to break into their starting line-up.

Kante would be competing for a place in the team with Morgan Schneiderlin and Victor Wanyama, providing the duo remain at St. Mary's over the summer, and displacing either of Southampton's star midfield pairing would be a huge task.
