Report: Arsenal, Tottenham join race to sign Mehmet Topal this summer

Arsenal and Tottenham are both reportedly interested in Fenerbahce midfielder Mehmet Topal.

According to Turkish website Fanatik, Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur are both interested in signing Fenerbahce midfielder Mehmet Topal.

The North London rivals are both looking to secure a top four place in the Premier League this season, but now look they could go head-to-head over a player in the transfer market.

Fanatik believe that both clubs have registered an interest in signing experienced midfielder Topal, along with Dutch side PSV Eindhoven.

Topal, 29, made his name with Galatasaray before moving to Spain with Valencia, but after just two seasons in La Liga he was back in Turkey with Fenerbahce - Galatasaray's biggest rivals.

He may not grab as many headlines in the Fenerbahce team as the likes of Diego or Emmanuel Emenike, but he's proven himself to be a top defensive midfielder with strength, accurate passing even a potent ability to shoot from long range.

Those attributes will attract interest from other clubs, and it appears that both Arsenal and Tottenham are suitably impressed with Topal, who has 47 Turkey caps to his name.

The Gunners have stumbled upon a promising holding midfielder in Francis Coquelin this season but could still look to upgrade the position, whilst Tottenham may look for someone with more experience than current starters Nabil Bentaleb and Ryan Mason.

Both clubs could now target Topal, with Fanatik believing that they will continue to scout him until the end of the season, and then consider bids from there.
