Jonas Gutierrez has explained that Newcastle must start the Tyne-Wear derby well.
“We want to get a win for the fans,” Gutierrez said. “They deserve it so we are going to work hard and start from the beginning. We can’t start late in the derby because we want three points.”
Newcastle travel to the Stadium of Light to face Sunderland, and thankfully for John Carver, he is leading his team against one of the most out-of-form sides in the division.
Yet, the Tyneside club themselves have hardly been on top form since Carver’s temporary appointment in January, and there have only really been 45 minutes of good football played since he took charge at St James’ Park.
With two victories to his name, it was actually the most recent loss to Arsenal that produced the Magpies' best football. After starting slowly and showing a dreadful first half, the side looked revitalised in the second period and were unfortunate not to come away with at least a point.
If they had started the game in the manner they ended it, Newcastle would have been a match for any team on their day, and Gutierrez is right to highlight the need to start strongly in the derby, with Sunderland likely to be motivated to secure the three points against their local rivals.
