Newcastle United’s trip to Sunderland this weekend is one of the biggest games on the Premier League fixture schedule.
Sunderland are under massive pressure near the bottom of the table and the Magpies would like nothing more than to condemn their local rivals to a place in the bottom three by the end of the Easter fixtures.
The midfield is arguably where this game is going to be won or lost with one of the key battles during the game the clash between Lee Cattermole and Sunderland’s former player Jack Colback.

It may surprise some to learn that Colback has been the more aggressive of the two players in key areas this season.
He’s made more tackles and has committed more fouls and both players need to try and keep their discipline during the game because neither team can afford to go down to ten men, which would only make their jobs more difficult.
As much as that is a criticism of Colback’s performances, he is ahead in terms of interceptions and he has a better passing accuracy.
Colback appears to read the game more effectively and if he can position himself well and prove that this weekend, as well as moving the ball forward sensibly, Newcastle have a better chance of maintaining pressure.
If he can also improve his goal tally, John Carver will be delighted but Sunderland are fighting for their lives at the moment.
