Why Villa defender's comments add further complication to Sherwood's tough summer dilemma

Aston Villa manager Tim Sherwood needs to decide whether or not to discuss a new contract with Ron Vlaar.

Aston Villa defender Leandro Bacuna has told the club's official website that Ron Vlaar is one of the top five defenders in the Premier League.

Vlaar has not played much for Villa of late, but Bacuna still rates him highly and spoke out in praise of the Dutch international earlier today.

"There are a lot of good defenders in the Premier League - Vincent Kompany and Gary Cahill to name just two. But I believe Ron is in the top five," he said. "He has everything - pace, vision, strength and leadership."

The comments highlight a problem that Tim Sherwood could have in the summer, with Vlaar's future far from secure.

The experienced defender is out of contract at the end of the season and it appears that he could be set to depart Villa Park.

With his years advancing and as one of the highest earners in their squad, Villa supporters are not too disappointed with this news, but it seems that it could have a big impact on the squad.

Although Vlaar has not played much for Villa recently, his teammates clearly still believe in his ability and losing a player who has such support from the rest of the squad could be a worry for Villa.

The Claret and Blues need to prove to their team that they are ready to move forward this summer and, if Bacuna's belief about Vlaar's ability is one which is widely held, then it is hard to see the news of his departure going down well.

It means that offering Vlaar a new contract may have to be pushed by Sherwood, as he will need to ensure that confidence and morale remains high within his ranks.
