Former Tottenham Hotspur defender Paul Stalteri suggested to talkSPORT how he sees Eric Dier’s career progressing at the club.
The ex-Spurs player suggested that Dier will consolidate and play regularly as a centre back over the next few years, as has been the case in recent weeks for the club.
“I think Dier is definitely more of a centre back – I definitely see him there more than as a full back, you’ll probably see him playing more and more there,” he said.
Mauricio Pochettino seems to have installed Dier as one of his regular centre backs alongside the more experienced option of Jan Vertonghen.
The experienced England youngster deserves a pat on the back for forcing his way in front of Federico Fazio in the pecking order and his challenge is to retain the position over the rest of the season and beyond.
The London Evening Standard recently reported that Napoli are taking a look at Jan Vertonghen and it will be interesting to see if Spurs sell this summer.
If they do, Dier is the man Pochettino could make his key central defender over the next couple of years as Tottenham look to fill the void, which would be created by Vertonghen’s absence.
Dier has had a decent first season as a Tottenham player. Things have been difficult and there are improvements to be made, but he has talent and he has longevity and if he’s allowed to play more and more at centre back, he will get better and gradually cut out the errors.
