As Newcastle United prepare to clash with Sunderland, one Magpies player has been speaking about the encounter.
Newcastle are currently 12th in the Premier League, having taken 35 points from 30 matches, while Sunderland are down in 17th place with 26 points, one point clear of the relegation zone.
Speaking ahead of the huge encounter, Perez said, “The derbies are for the fans. We want to make our fans proud of the team.
“The best thing after the derby would be to see the kids wearing their Newcastle jerseys at school with pride. That’s what we want and we are going to fight to get it.”
Newcastle may have little to play for at this stage of the season but they will be giving their all against Sunderland, as the latter’s new manager Dick Advocaat experiences this encounter for the first time.
Perez had a wonderful spell earlier in the campaign, when he scored three goals in three consecutive matches and five in 11 but he has not found the net since the end of December.
There would be no better time to change that than against Newcastle’s fierce rivals this weekend, and that would certainly send those Magpies fans home happy, both young and old.
