The Fiorentina loanee feels for Jones after his England criticism.
As England stepped out to face Italy in Turin last night there was one inclusion that really did get heads scratched. Manchester United star Phil Jones, who has been impressive in the heart of defence for club and country recently, was playing in the holding midfield role.
The move seemed odd from Roy Hodgson and the decision had plenty of critics on Twitter, Facebook and the like.
In the end Jones did not cover himself in glory. He was skinned in the build-to Italy's opening goal by Juventus defender Giorgio Chiellini - who then delivered the cross for Graziano Pelle to score.
But he backed Jones, despite the Manchester rivalry he should feel for the player. He Tweeted today:
How can phil Jones get criticism for playing holding mid! Everyone knows it's not his position. He did a job he was asked to do.???— Micah Richards (@MicahRichards) April 1, 2015
In the end Jones reverted to type. Chris Smalling, a fellow Manchester United player, was replaced by another when Michael Carrick came on after the defender had left the pitch with dizziness.
Jones looked far more comfortable at the heart of defence and, hopefully, this is the last we see of him in holding midfield - despite the defence from a Manchester City player.
