Newcastle United defender Daryl Janmaat has explained in the Chronicle that he trusts the side to react positively to the defeat against Arsenal.
It’s not going to be easy considering Sunderland are trying to fight their way away from the bottom three in the table, but what better incentive for Newcastle than to pile the misery onto their local rivals.
“We need to show what we did against Arsenal in the second half - I really believe that and trust the team,” said the Dutch defender.
“We deserved more than that. It was a shame we didn’t get the result to go into the derby.”
What made Newcastle’s performance against Arsenal all the more remarkable are the problems the current side have in terms of injuries.
The side showed great fighting spirit against a very talented and creative attacking team and that’s a good quality to have going into the derby game this weekend.
Newcastle also have the added inspiration to perform, which has been provided by the defeat the side suffered at the hands of Sunderland earlier in the season.
Adam Johnson scored the decisive goal on that occasion and John Carver will be hoping that the headlines are about one of his match winning heroes on Easter Monday.
