Liverpool legend believes Tottenham Hotspur ace should have simply let his football do the talking.
When the England squad was announced, the inclusion of Andros Townsend attracted plenty of criticism.
SkySports pundit Paul Merson had slammed his selection, claiming it proved 'anybody' could get picked for the Three Lions.
So it proved especially sweet for Tottenham ace Townsend when he came off the bench away to Italy last night to score a long range equaliser past Gianluigi Buffon.
Townsend showed after the game that Merson's comments had not escaped him, using his Twitter page to hit back at the former Arsenal midfielder.
Townsend's reaction seemed like the perfect response, but Jamie Carragher was unimpressed.
The former Liverpool defender is a SkySports colleague of Merson, and believes Townsend should have left it alone.
He used his Twitter page to express his opinion that his goal alone did the talking and there was no need for the dig.
Andros Townsend tonight on Twitter is taking Paul Merson to task on his opinions......his goal tonight was the answer not Twitter.— Jamie Carragher (@Carra23) March 31, 2015
Carragher may be conscious himself that he could be singled out by a player on the receiving end of his punditry criticism, analysis he clearly feels is just part of his job description.
Townsend could have risen above it, but Merson's criticism obviously stung him heading into the international fixtures.
Carragher also mentioned the real issue at hand for Townsend, fixing his form for his club.
Andros Townsend again shows he's better in an England shirt rather than a Spurs one. For 90% of players it's the other way around.— Jamie Carragher (@Carra23) March 31, 2015
