How would Manchester City cope if they missed out on the top four?

Manchester City Etihad 2

Manchester City could still potentially miss out on the top four, and how would they cope?

Manchester City have endured a poor season, and it is set to end with no silverware, and potentially a change in manager.

They currently sit inside the top four, at least ensuring that they qualify for next season’s Champions League, but on current form even that could escape them. A number of clubs are looking to qualify for Europe’s premier competition, and whilst currently above Manchester United and Arsenal, City’s form makes them most likely to drop out.

This would be a dreadful occurrence for the Premier League giants, but what would it actually do to the club?

Securing Champions League football is the big draw that City can offer to many of their players when looking to sign them, and missing out on qualification could not only scupper their summer transfer plans, but lead to a weakening of the current squad.

While a lot of the players will likely wish to stay at the Etihad, there would be real fears concerning the futures of Sergio Aguero, Yaya Toure and David Silva - the key players in the squad. They are good enough to be playing in the Champions League every season, and moves away could be on their agenda if City miss out.

Equally, the players needed to strengthen their squad will not choose City if they miss out on Europe, as many of the players they will look to sign will already be playing in the Champions League anyway.

The other big likelihood of City missing out on the top four would be the departure of Manuel Pellegrini, a decision that has seemingly already been made. Bringing in a new manager will not be as hard as new players - as many will be excited by the chance for a new challenge - but the real top staff members will be off the cards, increasing the difficulty of City’s return to the top of the Premier League.

There is no guaranteeing that City’s top four place is secured, and that should be a big worry for the club, with their status as a Premier League giant set to suffer if they miss out on the Champions League.
