Tottenham Hotspur attacker Andros Townsend hit back at Arsenal legend Paul Merson after scoring for the Three Lions.
Andros Townsend blasted Paul Merson after scoring an impressive equaliser for England against Italy.
The former Arsenal midfielder had told SkySports that Townsend should not be in Roy Hodgson's England squad, and if he could get in then 'anybody could'.
Merson is a regular critic of Tottenham, and had argued that Townsend was not in form and should have been left out for Ashley Young.
That to be fair was a popular call leading into the international break given Young's performances for Manchester United, but the comments clearly did not escape Townsend.
He came on as a second half substitute, and scored a great effort from outside the box past Gianluigi Buffon, who he swapped shirts with after the game.
Townsend has three international goals for his country and is emerging as a real favourite of manager Roy Hodgson.
Merson had made particular reference to Townsend's poor display against Manchester United at Old Trafford in which he was substituted by head coach Mauricio Pochettino after only half an hour.
