Report: Real Madrid line up alternative to United star De Gea

The Spanish giants are said to be considering Bayer Leverkusen's Bernd Leno instead of the Manchester United stopper.

Real Madrid are looking at German Bernd Leno as an alternative signing to Manchester United's David De Gea according to several media sources.

The Mirror is reporting that the Bayer Leverkusen stopper, 23, has a buyout clause of just £13 million, significantly less than the amount Real would have to pay United to have any hope of signing De Gea.

United have had to sweat out media reports claiming Real Madrid are interested in their number one, a move that would see the Premier League deprived of another of its top talents were it to come off. The fact the former Atletico man's contract is up in 2016 is only going to make Old Trafford supremos even jumpier as Iker Casillas' career as Real's undisputed first-choice winds down.

The Manchester club reluctantly sold star man Cristiano Ronaldo in 2009 to the La Liga giants despite the club being reigning Premier League champions. With the Red Devils only now on their way back towards the top of the division after a dismal season last year, it's no surprise that Real have reportedly been angling for a move for 24-year-old De Gea, a goalkeeper who has played out of his skin this year and proved himself one of the top stoppers in the world.

Louis van Gaal will be hoping that the significant fee it would surely take to convince the Glazers to sell De Gea would push Real into looking for more ecumenical alternatives, and it is no surprise that they are considering Leno, with Germany currently a hotbed of young goalkeeping talent.
