A closer look at the player most likely to be sold by Celtic during the close-season.
Celtic are in the midst of a campaign that could be remembered as one of the best in their illustrious history.
With the Scottish League Cup secured, Ronny Deila’s side now have the chance to add the Scottish Premiership title and the Scottish Cup to their trophy cabinet. But whatever the rest of the campaign has in store, the Bhoys’ boss is already likely to be looking ahead to next season.
Celtic are likely to see plenty of arrivals and departures in the summer, but could Efe Ambrose be the most likely player to be sold?
The Nigerian has featured 36 times this season but Jason Denayer’s emergence has seen Ambrose play more as a full-back than in his natural centre-back position of late.
The young Belgian may move back to his parent-club Manchester City this summer, but despite that it would be no great surprise if Ambrose also moved on given the mixed feelings Celtic fans have about him.
If Deila wants to build on this season’s success, he will want a solid back-line that can hopefully go further in Europe as well as maintain their domestic dominance, and Ambrose is too inconsistent to fulfil that particular role.
He may have played 129 matches for the Bhoys to date, but after the Daily Mail linked him with a failed £3million move to Greek side Olympiakos back in January, he could move on once Deila has more time to replace him.
Liverpool’s Tiago Ilori has already been linked by the Shields Gazette and when you consider the impressive nature of Celtic’s squad overall, Ambrose is one of the few players who could realistically be sold when the next transfer window opens.
