Arsenal star Theo Walcott jokes about getting old

Arsenal Stadium - Emirates

An Arsenal star has joked about getting older having previously been hailed as a boy-wonder.

Arsenal player Theo Walcott has joked about how he is no longer one of England’s young guns during an interview with the FA’s official website.

Walcott is now 26, and it has been quite some time since he burst onto the scene as a prodigious teenager.

Walcott was just 16 when he moved from Southampton to Arsenal for an initial £5million rising to £12.5million.

At the time he was the latest in a long line of wonder-kids tipped to take the footballing world by storm, but while things have not always gone his way, the Arsenal forward still has plenty to be proud of.

Joking about his age, he said of his England teammates, “We have great options. You want all the players playing well and going into a tournament you want everyone to be fit.

“They are still very young. I’m only 26 and relatively young, but feel like one of the old boys; the grey hairs are coming.”

While it is a joke it is also a sign of just how quickly time flies in football. From talented teen to experienced winger; a decade on and some would argue Walcott has still not fulfilled his potential.

But now he is fit again, he has the chance to star for both a very impressive Arsenal side and a promising national team.
