When Cristian Gamboa arrived at West Bromwich Albion from Norwegian side Rosenborg in the summer, it looked like a very canny piece of business by then-manager Alan Irvine.
The Costa Rica international had shone at the recent World Cup, playing a significant role in his country’s shock progress to the quarter-finals.
But less than a year on, the 25-year-old right-back has barely featured for West Brom and it would be no surprise to see him move on in the close-season; which could give Celtic the perfect opportunity to sign a player who would be perfect for them.
Efe Ambrose is currently Celtic’s makeshift right-back despite being more commonly known as a central defender, while 20-year-old Darnell Fisher is likely to get more chances in that position next season.
But Gamboa has age and talent on his side and his previous spell in Norway means Celtic manager Ronny Deila should be well aware of him.
Things have clearly not worked out for Gamboa at West Brom but that does not mean he should abandon British football after a single season.
If Deila is willing to take a shot, he could sign a player who is brilliant at getting up and down the pitch and would offer Celtic a solid, natural and experienced option at right-back.
