Report: Newcastle not in talks with Steve McClaren about becoming next manager

Newcastle are reportedly not in talks with Steve McClaren over becoming their new manager.

According to The Chronicle, Newcastle United have held no talks with potential new managers despite speculation surrounding a potential move for Derby County's Steve McClaren.

The Magpies allowed manager Alan Pardew to join Crystal Palace back in January, and chose to hand John Carver the reins until the end of the season rather than rush into a mid-season appointment.

Carver has won just two of his 12 games in charge of Newcastle so far, and it seems unlikely that he will keep the job beyond the end of the season.

Recent reports from the Daily Mirror suggested that Newcastle had lined up a £60m summer revamp, which would involve Steve McClaren arriving as their new manager.

The former England boss has impressed with Derby this season, but their recent poor run of form means that they could miss out on promotion to the Premier League.

If the Rams do stay in the Championship, it may be hard to keep hold of McClaren, with Newcastle believed to be interested in handing a return to the North East for the ex-Middlesbrough manager.

However, despite those reports from The Mirror that McClaren is in line to become the next Newcastle manager, The Chronicle believe that the Magpies have yet to hold talks with McClaren - or anybody else - about replacing Carver this summer.

That again leaves fans waiting to see who the next boss will be, but McClaren remains favourite with the bookmakers at this point.
