The ex Black Cats midfielder was full of praise for his captain's extraordinary leadership.
Liverpool's Jordan Henderson has been discussing the influence Steven Gerrard has had on his own Anfield career in quotes from Sky Sports, crediting the Reds legend for helping him settle in on Merseyside.
After a superb campaign last year when he underlined his abilities as a player alongside Gerrard, things have gotten even better for Henderson this season.
The midfielder's performances have moved up yet another level, as he has compensated for the spells when Gerrard has been out of the side with some superb displays, including an increased influence when it comes to creating and scoring goals.
It has renewed observations that Henderson is the perfect, and obvious replacement for Gerrard when the latter departs for LA Galaxy at the end of the season, both in terms of style of play and as a leader for the Reds.
It's a cliched and obvious comparison to make between the two midfielders, but given the quality the former Sunderland man has shown at times this season, with his committed, box-to-box displays and an increasing number of match winners, it's hard not to see the comparison.
And Henderson is sure to have benefitted from working with one of the Premier League's best midfielders, revealing that Gerrard was a great help when he arrived from the Stadium of Light in 2011.
"When I first came to the club, he was brilliant with us," the England international said of his Anfield captain.
"When I wasn't playing so much, he was just the same, helping us on the field with what I needed to do and improve on. And also off the field, he's brilliant.
"He's just got this sort of presence about him, that real leadership.
"He's just a real humble person as well, which is amazing really, for all the young players at Liverpool. I'm sure everybody there has learnt a lot from him."
