Does Celtic's reported interest in Liverpool's Tiago Ilori suggest Jason Denayer is about to move on?

Could Celtic's reported interest in one player see another head for the exit too soon?

According to a report from the Shields Gazette, Celtic are interested in signing Liverpool defender Tiago Ilori.

The report claims the Bhoys were one of the clubs present to scout the 22-year-old during Portugal’s recent under-21 clash against Denmark. So could this be the clearest sign yet that Jason Denayer will not be at Celtic next season?

The on-loan centre-back has excelled under Ronny Deila in a campaign that could ultimately lead to an historic treble. But such has been the 19-year-old’s progress that it would be no surprise if he returned to his parent-club Manchester City this summer.

The young Belgian has made 33 appearances for Celtic so far this season, scoring six goals and providing two assists in that time.

Despite his youth he has looked a class act in the heart of Deila’s defence and the Bhoys would surely love to keep him for at least another season. But the latest links with Ilori suggest Celtic could be considering alternatives if they do lose one of this season’s stand-out stars in the summer.

Ilori signed for Liverpool in 2012 but he is yet to make his senior debut for the club, instead heading out on loan first to Granada and more recently French side Bordeaux.

The former Sporting Lisbon player is now a regular starter for the Ligue 1 club and he would be an impressive addition to Celtic’s squad.

But while it is mere speculation at this time, one promising young player’s arrival at Celtic Park could herald the departure of another…
