Taking a closer look at the one player Aston Villa should sell above all others this summer.
Aston Villa are likely to see a few changes to their playing squad this summer, with manager Tim Sherwood set to strengthen where possible and wave goodbye to those players that have no future at the club.
But while centre-back Ron Vlaar looks likely to leave on a free transfer, who is the player most likely to be sold by Villa this summer?
There are a few candidates, but having flattered to deceive since his arrival at Villa Park, could Kieran Richardson be the first out the door?
The 30-year-old is in essence a jack of all trades but a master of none; a player who has already featured in five different positions for Villa despite making only 19 appearances to date.
After spells as an attacking midfielder, central midfielder, left winger and right winger his last two appearances have seen him play at left-back, but with injuries and suspensions robbing him of game-time, would it be better to sell him just a year after he arrived?
It could be argued that Richardson’s red card against West Bromwich Albion back in December was the point of no return, with him missing 11 of the next 14 matches.
Sherwood needs players who can do a job for him, and Richardson is not the answer to any of Villa’s current problems.
At 30, and with a year left on his contract, it may be wise for the club to move him on and sign players who are strong in key positions.
Utility players are key to every squad, but they must be relied upon week in, week out, and Richardson’s recent form has suggested he is not that man.
