Liverpool have reportedly been tracking Hughes for some time – as confirmed in the article – but a recent long-term deal for the 19-year-old appeared to end any speculation linking him with a move to Anfield.
But the latest report claims Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers is prepared to spend big to sign a player who is highly-rated at Derby and has been making waves for quite some time.
Hughes has played 131 matches for Derby to date, scoring 10 goals and providing 14 assists in that time.
This season he has featured 43 times and has helped Steve McClaren’s side to their current fifth-place position in the second tier.
They are five points outside the automatic promotion places and just one point clear of seventh-placed Brentford – the side currently closest to the playoff places.
Liverpool need quality midfield reinforcements this summer, with Steven Gerrard moving to the MLS and Rodgers surely keen to strengthen further.
At just 19, Hughes would be a long-term investment but he has shown the ability to suggest he could become one of the Premier League’s best performers with time and patience.
Derby will be hoping he gets that chance with them. But if the latest report is true, Liverpool could be waiting with chequebook in hand just in case they fall short come May.
