Former Liverpool star Dirk Kuyt says Reds skipper Steven Gerrard is the best player he has ever played with ahead of Sunday’s all-star charity event at Anfield, The Sun report.
The Dutch international spent six years on Merseyside between 2006 and 2012, making over 200 Premier League appearances and helping the club the lift League Cup in his final season.
During his time at Anfield, Kuyt played alongside a number of world-class players, such as Luis Suarez, Javier Mascherano, Fernando Torres and Xabi Alonso.
However, when asked to name the best player he has played with, with little hesitation, he chose current Reds skipper Gerrard ahead of the aforementioned quartet, plus the likes of Arjen Robben and Robin van Persie.
“I have had time on the pitch with some greats — Luis Suarez, Arjen Robben, Robin van Persie, Ruud van Nistelrooy, Fernando Torres. All fantastic players but for me, Gerrard was the best of them all,” Kuyt said.
Steven Gerrard the very best?
Liverpool have boasted some wonderful players in recent years, no more so than Barcelona striker Luis Suarez and Bayern Munich’s Xabi Alonso.
The latter in particular has won numerous trophies, including La Liga and the Champions League with Real Madrid, as well as the World Cup and European Championship with Spain.
The Spaniard’s passing range is among the very best in the world, and the Reds’ sudden plight following their 2008/09 title challenge largely coincided with Alonso’s transfer to Real Madrid.
However, while Gerrard’s technical ability may not match up to Alonso, he more than makes up for it with his influence and leadership – qualities which can often be overlooked.
The 34-year-old is set to leave Anfield in the summer after winding down his contract and, owing to his overall achievements, he certainly ranks among the very best to have ever played for the illustrious club.
