Schmeichel says Ibrahimovic would be a great signing for Manchester United

A former Manchester United great has tipped an enigmatic striker to be a big hit at Old Trafford were he to arrive.

Former Manchester United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel has been speaking to French newspaper L’Equipe about Paris Saint-Germain striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

The Swedish international has scored 23 goals in 30 matches for the Ligue 1 side this season and he has a total of 99 goals in 122 matches for his current side.

Prior to that he netted 66 goals for Inter Milan and 56 goals for their fierce rivals AC Milan, while additional spells at the likes of Ajax, Barcelona and Juventus means he has a total of 316 goals in 569 club games.

In his latest interview, extracts of which were later published by Sports.orange.fr, Schmeichel said, “Last summer there were rumours that he would come to Manchester United. I then said that Zlatan was built for the club, he was born to play.

“There are hundreds of players who are trying to be a Beckham or a Cantona but do not have the personality, and they fail.”

Ibrahimovic certainly has the personality, but at 33, and unlikely to come cheap, it remains to be seen if United would stump up the cash for a player whose current contract expires in the summer of 2016.

That said, with Radamel Falcao failing to score regularly and Robin van Persie another year older, it would be no surprise if United did sign at least one new quality forward in the close-season to support Wayne Rooney and the young James Wilson.
