Five years ago today Southampton won the Football League Trophy

Current Liverpool and Nottingham Forest players bagged the goals as Southampton beat Carlisle 4-1.

Looking at the Premier League table now it is hard to believe that the team currently in sixth place played in the Football League Trophy final five years ago to the day!

But that is the case.

On the 28th March 2010, Southampton faced Carlisle United at Wembley and were victorious, winning 4-1.

The likes of Adam Lallana, Jose Fonte and Rickie Lambert played that day. Goals from Lambert, Lallana and Papa Waigo had Southampton 3-0 up after 50 minutes.

Lambert and Lallana are now of course fully fledged England internationals and current Liverpool players, while Waigo plays in the Middle East.

It is easy to also forget that a current Nottingham Forest star scored in that game. Michail Antonio netted in the 60th minute. Aged just 19, he was on a season long loan deal from Reading. He went on to leave The Royals for Sheffield Wednesday in 2012 and is now a hero at Forest.

Carlisle's consolation on the day came from Gary Madine, who has also gone through a lot in the past five years, and it is truly hard to believe that The Saints were this lowly at one point.

Now, five years on, they are challenging for European places in the Premier League. It is a remarkable recovery and one which shows just what can be achieved in football with the right blend of talent, good management and desire.
