Chris Sutton says Celtic's Nir Biton could play at the highest level

A Celtic player who has impressed this season has received considerable praise from a former Bhoys star.

In his column for the Daily Record, former Celtic striker Chris Sutton has reserved special praise for one of the Bhoys’ standout stars this season.

Nir Biton has blossomed into an extremely good defensive midfielder, his performance away to Inter Milan a particularly notable contribution in a campaign full of promise. And now Sutton has had his say on the 23-year-old who looks set to become one of Celtic’s most important players for years to come.

“He has bundles of talent and I’ve been mightily impressed with him,” Sutton said of the Israel international.

“Biton has the physique and the calmness in possession which means he could play at the highest level in the future. In that position you have to be comfortable on the ball and he can take it under pressure. He also has good ideas in his head.”

Biton has made 33 appearances for Celtic this season, scoring one goal and providing three assists in that time. But it is his work further back that simply cannot be ignored.

Defensive midfielders too often miss out on the plaudits, with headline-makers getting all the praise. But in Biton, Celtic have a potential superstar on their hands and after a steady first campaign at the club his second season has been a true breakout.

Sutton is right: at this rate there is no telling how good Biton can become. But whatever happens, Celtic will be desperate to keep hold of him for the long term.
