Manchester City hero brands summer recruit a ‘terrible signing’

Rodney Marsh has not been impressed with Manchester City’s Eliaquim Mangala.

Manchester City hero Rodney Marsh has spoken out on the current troubles at the Etihad stadium, branding Eliaquim Mangala a terrible signing in a rant reported by the Daily Mail.

The centre-back joined the Citizens last summer in a big-money deal, moving from Portuguese giants Porto following a highly successful spell at the Estadio do Dragao.

Labelled as strong, dominant in the air and possessing excellent positional sense, Manuel Pellegrini thought he had solved his dilemma and brought in a solid partner for skipper Vincent Kompany.

Mangala however has struggled to replicate his previous top form in Portugal so far this season, prompting Marsh to label his acquisition as nothing short of terrible.

“I think in fact that City have to rebuild the team, not only in a couple of positions, but across the whole team. I think Mangala has been a terrible signing. He's shown nothing so far,” he explained.

Mangala has featured in 18 Premier League matches this season, with seven of those resulting in clean sheets as per the table above provided by Opta.

The 24-year-old made his debut in the 1-1 draw at home to Chelsea, a match in which he performed excellently and received plenty of plaudits from observers and pundits alike.

However, his good form didn’t last as not long after a disastrous performance away at Hull City ensued and he later received his first red card in English football during his side’s 3-0 win at Southampton.

The French international has plenty of doubters, not least club hero Rodney Marsh, but at his young age he still has plenty of time to prove exactly why City opted to splash so heavily on his services.
