Sami Khedira recently confirmed to German magazine Kicker that while he will always have a special place in his heart for Real Madrid, he will be leaving the Spanish capital when his current contract expires at the end of June.
Khedira's announcement came as no surprise, as it was clear that the World Cup winner would not remain at Real Madrid following their signing of Lucas Silva this past January but Europe's top clubs, including front-runner Schalke 04, were put on high alert following the confirmation.
In an interview with Germany's Sport 1, Di Matteo stated that the door is wide open for Sami Khedira to join Schalke 04, but also admitted that the signing will be difficult.
"The door is wide open for him. Any manager would love to have him, but he;ll plenty of options which will make it very difficult to bring him here."
Khedira has spent the last two years in and out of the infermary due to a knee injury suffered in a friendly last year, with much of the 27-year-old's time spent in his native Germany undergoing his recovery before playing in the World Cup last summer.
Arsenal, Chelsea, and Liverpool were all linked to the gifted German by The Sun this week.
