Liverpool have been heavily linked with a summer move for Inter Milan starlet Mateo Kovacic this week, with reports that the Reds have sent scouts to watch the Croatia international.
His array of passing, technique on the ball and vision would be an excellent addition for the Merseyside club, but the fact he is being linked with Brendan Rodgers’ side is slightly strange.
Kovacic is a prodigious talent and one that was being linked with a number of high-profile European clubs last year, but he effectively ended speculation over his future in January by signing a new four-year deal with his current employers.
Although the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza outfit have had well-publicised financial issues and are clearly struggling due to the lack of Champions League football, selling Kovacic should be quite far down the Italian club’s list of priorities.
With the star under contract until 2019 at Inter, Roberto Mancini will surely want to build a new young team around the Croat playmaker, rather than selling one of the club’s most consistent performers.
