Rob Lee has highlighted one Newcastle player as a key figure in the club’s future.

Former midfielder Rob Lee has told the Chronicle that Jack Colback should be central to the Magpies’ future as a club, having had a strong season.

“Colback has done well for us and will have a big part to play in the future,” the 300-game veteran said.

25-year-old midfielder Colback signed for Newcastle on a free transfer last summer, leaving Sunderland after progressing through their academy and into the first-team set-up.

The local rivalry had many criticising the former England youth international, but as a Newcastle fan, Colback was wise to jump ship from the Black Cats - with relegation to the Championship looking highly possible this season.

Since signing for his boyhood club, Colback has been a key figure in the centre of the park, offering his incredible work-rate and tenacious ability to good effect. He has missed just three of a possible 30 Premier League games, and of his 27 appearances, all have been starts.

Although the Magpies have struggled to find consistent form this season, Colback has been one key positive of their troubling campaign, and to secure his signing on a free could be considered a great piece of business.

Criminally underrated by many in the Premier League, it is great to see Lee - himself an energetic midfielder - believes that Colback is a vital part of Newcastle’s future, and the club should really start to build their first-team around a talented individual who has been born and bred as a Magpies fan.
