Does reported £15m striker target signal Newcastle's summer plans?

The Geordies reportedly aim to spend big after admitting they failed their fan base last summer and Anderlecht striker Aleksandar Mitrovic may be their top target.

Another disappointing campaign has seen Newcastle drift in mid-table in the Barclays Premier League, and while they sit in 12th position a full 10 points above the drop zone, their demanding fans are calling for a statement of intent this summer.

Anderlecht's Serbian striker Aleksandar Mitrovic has notched 27 goals in 49 games for the Belgian giants, with 13 of those coming in 26 games this season. A healthy goal every other game ratio has attracted a number of suitors and Newcastle are said to be amongst them, as they attempt to learn from previous mistakes.

The Chronicle has reported that the north east giants see the 6ft 3in 20-year-old as immediately ready to impact upon the Premier League, a factor the club are looking at after conceding they should have been more ambitious in securing Loic Remy and Alexandre Lacazette last summer.

Now, with John Carver's future up in the air and a disgruntled fan base eager for fresh ambition from the board, Newcastle face a pivotal summer. It is reported the club are preparing to release accounts next week showing encouraging profits, and this will only point one way in terms of where the squad's problems need to be addressed.

It is clear that Newcastle dare not get their recruitment strategy wrong again and rather than the large-scale investment in terms of numbers last season, this upcoming transfer window is likely to target quality procurement ready to influence matters on the field straight away.

Certainly, as Newcastle meander in mid-table once again they cannot afford to drift the other way and investment in quality personnel - both on the pitch and in the dugout - must be top priority.
