Arsenal linked Sami Khedira is risking following Victor Valdes' fate

Sami Khedira warming up

Why Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool linked Sami Khedira is taking an unnecessary risk with his career.

Sami Khedira made clear this week in an interview with German magazine Kicker that he plans to leave Real Madrid on a free transfer this summer

The World Cup winner has not yet decided where he will sign, stating simply that he wants to take on a new challenge is his career.

While linked prominently with Premier League side Arsenal, The Sun reported interest from Chelsea and Liverpool as well as the Gunners.

This wait until the season's end is not without it's risks however. To see this all Khedira needs to do is look at Victor Valdes.

The Spaniard attempted to play the market a year ago and leave Barcelona as a free agent. Big wages were thought to be on offer at Monaco, before his plans fell apart as he suffered a serious knee injury.

Valdes exited the summer transfer window still unsigned, and while he was picked up by Manchester United in January on a free transfer, his chances of playing are slim with David de Gea established.

He has gone from a top star to an expensive back-up, while had he stayed at Barcelona or signed elsewhere he may have a better chance of playing regularly.

It is not a risk Khedira should take lightly, for he too has suffered the same cruciate knee ligament injury Valdes did in the past at Real, and missed several months. Even this campaign a series of muscle injuries have restricted the 27-year-old to only three La Liga starts.

Re-signing at Real may not be the answer, but leaving it so long without signing anywhere could be. If he gets injured now, Khedira has no job security or contract to fall back on, which as Valdes will attest to, makes coming back from a serious injury should it befall him, a lot harder.
