The Uruguayan legend has joined BK Hacken.
The former Fenerbahce and Paris Saint-Germain defender was once considered one of South America's best defenders. However age got the better of him and as time went by his lack of pace became unbearable.
At West Brom he rarely had a good game, playing just nine times in the Premier League and struggling with the pace of English football.
After just one season at the club West Brom released him in the summer.
With Barcelona struggling under a transfer embargo a few months ago the Spanish giants were reported by Football France to be considering a move for the Uruguayan, so that tells you something about the reputation that precedes him.
Now, finally, after a long wait looking for a new team, he has one.
Swedish Allsvenskan side BK Hacken!
In a shock move the Swedish side, who finished fifth in the league last season, have snapped him up on a short-term deal.
The agent who brokered the deal has posted this Tweet on his official account, including a picture of the player with the kit, as TMW report the deal as done.
I'm extremely proud to have succesfully brokered a transfer of Uruguyan legend Diego Lugano to Swedish BK Häcken. pic.twitter.com/OdKDSRqgsP— Jonne Lindblom (@JonneLindblom) March 26, 2015
Lugano will want to play at the Copa America for Uruguay in the summer and he will now hope that he can star in the Swedish league in order to push him through to the national team for the first time since a horror show performance against Costa Rica at the World Cup last summer.
