A question posed by Los Angeles FC's official Twitter account during the USA's friendly match in Denmark soon led to a humorous chain of events.
Los Angeles FC won’t begin their inaugural MLS season until 2017 but, in the meantime, the expansion side are attempting to win fans over through the medium of Twitter.
As the US national team took on Denmark in last night’s clash in Aarhus, their official account decided to pose the following question, which soon took a humorous turn as followers chimed in.
Halftime. Denmark’s easy goal is enough to keep them level with the US. Anyone that you guys think would look good in an @LAFC jersey?— LAFC (@LAFC) March 25, 2015
Of course, Twitter couldn’t help having a laugh at LAFC’s expense and it should come as no surprise that former Arsenal misfit Nicklas Bendtner, who was starting for the home side, was the most popular suggestion for the team’s first star signing.
The California-based franchise went along with the gag, perhaps oblivious to his less-than-glittering reputation, but the Dane had managed to do his market value some good after netting the 33rd-minute equaliser to level the scores at 1-1 heading into the break.
According to our quick twitter poll, most LAFC fans think Nicklas Bendtner should be a future LAFC DP. 2nd Half underway now on ESPN!— LAFC (@LAFC) March 25, 2015
If LAFC weren’t quite convinced of Bendtner’s DP credentials at that stage, though, then the second-half seemed to do the trick.
Our fans must be celebrating that one! Bendtner is now on a hat trick and #DENvUSA is 2-2. Seven minutes for US to find a winner on ESPN.— LAFC (@LAFC) March 25, 2015
With the US taking the lead again in the 67th-minute through Aron Johannsson, it was the much-maligned striker who would end up proving the home side’s hero, as he netted another two goals in the final eight minutes to complete his hat-trick and hand Morten Olsen’s men a 3-2 win.
Tough one to take. US falls 3-2 to Denmark. Halftime poll, most of you wanted Nicklas Bendtner. After the match who is your pick? #DENvUSA— LAFC (@LAFC) March 25, 2015
So, if "Lord Bendtner" does end up turning out for LAFC come 2017, then we’ll be able to pinpoint the exact moment when their courtship first began.
Furthermore, given his diva-like approach to football and life in general, it’s not hard to imagine him fitting in well among the celebrities of LA - just don't expect him to attract a Beckham-like crowd when he's strolling down Venice Beach.
