Newcastle United are said to be interested in signing Charlton Athletic defender Joe Gomez, according to a report in the Chronicle.
Gomez is regarded as one of the finest prospects in the Football League and it is thought that the Magpies will try and convince him to come to St. James' Park in the summer.
The North East outfit are in need of defensive recruits and they apparently feel that the 17-year-old centre-back could be a star for the club in the near future.
What would the impact of Gomez's signing be for Newcastle?
Newcastle have already shown their willingness to sign the Football League's better players by snapping up Nottingham Forest's Jamaal Lascelles and Karl Darlow, so it would not be all that surprising to see Gomez recruited too.
The defender has already made 16 appearances for Charlton and he appears to play with an intelligence that belies his tender years.
Gomez is comfortable in possession, but also commanding in the air, and he seems to have all the skills required to play at a higher level in the future.
Although Gomez would be unlikely to break straight into Newcastle's team, they do have a lack of cover in defence at the moment so he could receive an opportunity at some stage over the season.
