Report: Newcastle set to lose Williamson in defensive re-shuffle for next season

Newcastle United are reportedly considering forcing out a key defender at the end of this season.

The Chronicle has described the circumstances, which could lead to experienced centre back Mike Williamson leaving Newcastle United this summer.

The paper suggests that 31-year-old, who has played well over 100 times for the club, will be the man forced out with a number of defensive options developing for John Carver or the man who replaces him as permanent boss for next season.

Steven Taylor, Jamaal Lascelles, Ryan Taylor are all mentioned as the sort of players Newcastle want to focus on, with potential further investment in younger players in the transfer market.

What will make the news remarkable and confusing for some Newcastle fans is that plans are reportedly underway for next season when there are so many question marks, which currently hang over the club’s back four.

Newcastle need all of the experience and quality they can get over the rest of the season as they look to force their way into and then consolidate in the top half of the Premier League table.

The defence is a vital part of the team and this reports the back four could look completely different next season, without the benefit of the experience that Williamson provides.
