Chelsea's Eden Hazard is Merson's pick instead of Harry Kane.
The sensational form of Harry Kane has him in the conversation for Player of the Season honours, with his incredible hat-trick at the weekend rubber-stamping his dramatic rise to the top.
Kane has been picked for his first England call up this week, where he has the chance to further enhance his reputation.
Three SkySports pundits have selected him for the season's top individual awards, Matt le Tissier, Paul Walsh and Alan Smith.
Paul Merson was also effusive in his praise of the striker, telling SkySports: "He reminds me of Teddy Sheringham; he drops off, comes looking for the ball. He has an unbelievable future in the game."
The ex-Arsenal midfielder did not select Kane as his player of the year however, believing Eden Hazard of Chelsea more deserving instead.
He was in the majority, with Thierry Henry, Graeme Souness, Phil Thompson, Charlie Nicholas, Tony Cottee, Tony Gale, and Alan McInally all voting for the Belgian.
Hazard scored a terrific goal of his own at the weekend, an opener from distance against Hull City, and has been integral to Chelsea's title charge.
Kane won't be upset to miss out on the top gong, for he has achieved so much this season already, but the fact there are pundits like former Southampton great Matt le Tissier who believes he deserves the top individual award speaks volumes for his progress.
Further impact between now and the end of the season to help England win this week, and even get Spurs closer to finishing in the top four, could yet change the perception of his dream 2014/15 campaign to seem even greater.
