Newcastle United midfielder Siem De Jong says that he will not be fit in time to face Sunderland next weekend.
Although the Dutchman has stepped up his recovery, and has started specialist training, he admits that the North East derby will be too soon for him to make a comeback.
De Jong has been out since September after picking up a knee injury and then suffering with a collapsed lung, and he took to Twitter today to update Newcastle fans on his progress.
The Magpies have clearly missed De Jong this season, as he was expected to come in and be one of their most integral players when signed last summer.
Newcastle had intended for the 26-year-old to provide them with creativity and goals from midfield, and in his absence they have struggled.
Although the Magpies have a number of energetic midfielders, they do not have many who are as comfortable in possession as De Jong and it will be a major boost when he does return.
It seems that will not be in time for the Sunderland match, but Newcastle will be hoping he can play some part before the end of the season.
