Southampton loanee Toby Alderweireld admits he'd like to play with Tottenham's Jan Vertonghen again

A current Southampton player has made comments that could be of interest to Tottenham Hotspur.

Southampton’s on-loan centre-back Toby Alderweireld has been speaking to Belgian website HLN about the possibility of teaming up with his former Ajax teammate Jan Vertonghen at Tottenham Hotspur.

The player – currently on loan at St Mary’s from Atletico Madrid – was linked with a move to White Hart Lane by the Telegraph earlier this month, and now he has stoked the flames of speculation with his own comments, even though he acknowledged the Spanish side would ultimately decide his future.

“It would be very nice to play again with Jan,” Alderweireld said, after the two had previously turned out for the Dutch giants earlier in their careers.

“The interest has yet to be concrete and finally Atletico must let me go. I have to wait for the calls after the season.”

Alderweireld has enjoyed a brilliant campaign at Southampton and it would be no surprise if Tottenham were interested given his talent and the fact that Spurs’ defence has looked shaky in recent weeks.

Southampton may also want to turn the loan move into a permanent deal but Atletico hold all the cards.

Both Tottenham and the Saints have impressed this season but with neither likely to qualify for the Champions League next season it could ultimately be down to who wants the player more.

But having admitted he would like to play with Vertonghen at club level again, could Tottenham hold a not-so-secret weapon?
