Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino produced a worrying assessment of his team’s defence with comments he made to talkSPORT.
The Spurs boss implied that while he was wary of his team conceding too many goals, he felt threw emphasis on the fact that as long as his side score more than their opposition and secure three points, they’re reaching their objectives.
“I am a little bit concerned because you are never happy when you concede three goals at home,” said Pochettino.
“Yes, we need to be consistent and we need to improve, but we are young, we are very young – but if we score four and we concede three, it’s three points for us.”
It’s a worry because Tottenham need to try and make life easier for themselves by keeping clean sheets on a more frequent basis.
Spurs have conceded eight goals in their last three games and haven’t kept a clean sheet since they defeated West Brom in the Premier League last January.
You’re always going to get good entertainment and value from any Tottenham game, but the defence has to sharpen up over the rest of the season.
If the defence improves, the edge and the pressure is taken off of the attack because they may only have to score one goal to win a game over three or four.
The good news is that Pochettino now has a couple of weeks to look at what’s been going wrong at the back and to think of ways the situation could be improved looking ahead to the rest of the season.
