Newcastle United star Ayoze Perez has told the Chronicle what manager John Carver told the squad at half-time during the game against Arsenal.
Newcastle found themselves 2-0 down at the break last weekend against the Gunners, before they pulled a goal back after half-time.
“The manager said the truth - that we conceded two bad goals. We can’t gift them that. He told us that we needed to improve and be strong, and we did,” said Perez.
Carver is a very honest, open and passionate manager who is not afraid of telling his players when they need to pull their weight and buck up their ideas in big games.
The response was superb and the disappointing thing for the manager and the fans will be why the side couldn’t have started the game in the same way.
What makes the second half performance more remarkable is that resources around the club are extremely stretched at the moment.
The side has a number of injuries, which means Carver has been forced to play the same players, removing the luxury of him being able to freely make changes in the second half of games to give players a breather.
Hopefully after the international break in the game against Sunderland, the Magpies will be at Dick Advocaat’s side from the very first whistle and looking to pile on the misery for the club’s local rivals.
